Medical Aid in Dying

A medical practice available to terminally ill adults with decision-making capacity who wish to control their already-anticipated death by self-ingesting medications to end their life on their own terms

The Law

Allows an eligible terminally ill individual with a prognosis of ≤6mo to request and self-administer medications to voluntarily end their life

Authorizes a provider to prescribe lethal medications to a terminally ill individual who has been evaluated and deemed eligible for MAID

Eligibility Criteria

EACH ITEM must be met in order to qualify

  • Adult: ≥18yr

  • Terminally ill: prognosis of ≤6mo ​

  • Resident of Colorado

  • Decision-Making Capacity

  • Able to self-administer

Each of the above must be evaluated by 2 clinicians independently

Process

considerations

  • The process can take weeks to complete all steps: start early

  • While there is no requirement for caregiver support, we strongly recommend you identify the individuals whom you would like to support you in this process

  • Enroll in hospice as soon as possible: their care is a profound resource for anyone living with a terminal condition; the earlier you enroll, the sooner you receive the benefits of their comprehensive expertise
